A Lifestyle of Food
Some view food as a commodity or a source of energy and
nutrition. Then there are those who see it as a lifestyle, a way to express
themselves through flavor and creativity. The film "Julie &
Julia" depicts food as a way of life, arguably a religion. It’s said those
who cook prepare and serve food that reflects their personality. In the movie “Julie
& Julia” each character takes on the challenge to be a good cook. They cook
so much that they begin to struggle and hate it, but they can’t stop and soon
enough they’re hooked. Discovering new things about themselves through creating
dishes and the hard work of simply preparing a meal. But I found myself asking,
how could something like cooking have such an impact on someone.
As the movie went on I soon realized what they saw in cooking. The movie represented cooking as a way of escape and a time for relaxing. As the characters dealt with everyday challenges they went on with their cooking and found cooking as a vent for stress. As their love for cooking grew, so did their actions and personality. They finally grasp it as a lifestyle in a way, making cooking an everyday thing and making something new everyday and serving it to their loved ones. It is easy to tell when you compare the main characters’ love for food to the others, by their compassion and dedication towards food.
After the adventure in the movies ends they continue to practice their skill in cooking. The movie’s sense of personal gain and loss of cooking was inspiring and psychological. The different ways people acted and treated food in the movie was interesting. To see that portrayed in a movie was entertaining yet it brought to life the power of food itself.
